Embrace the Season Through Craft
Autumn is one of the most inspiring seasons for crafters — rich in colour, texture, and natural materials. From pressed leaves and dried botanicals to wool and warm-toned yarns, the season provides an abundance of creative possibilities. Here are seven projects to bring autumnal warmth into your home.
1. Pressed Leaf Botanical Prints
Collect leaves in peak autumn colour — maple, oak, and sweet gum are particularly striking. Press them between heavy books for 1–2 weeks until fully flat and dry. Arrange on watercolour paper, brush the back with acrylic paint, and press firmly onto the paper to create stunning botanical prints. Frame them in sets for a gallery wall display.
2. Dried Citrus and Spice Garland
Thinly slice oranges and lemons, place on a baking rack, and dry in a low oven (around 90°C / 200°F) for 3–4 hours. Thread the dried slices with cinnamon sticks, dried rosebuds, and whole cloves using strong twine or wire. The result is a fragrant, rustic garland that looks beautiful above a fireplace or across a mantelpiece.
3. Chunky Knit Table Runner
Using super-chunky merino wool and large needles (or even arm-knitting), create a textured table runner in earthy tones — terracotta, burnt orange, or deep mustard. A simple knit stitch throughout creates a beautiful ribbed effect. This project can be completed in an afternoon and dramatically transforms a dining table setting.
4. Painted Pumpkin Arrangement
Skip the carving and paint your pumpkins instead — they'll last longer and look more sophisticated. Use chalk paint or spray paint in matte neutrals (cream, sage, slate), then add details with gold leaf, fine liner pens, or stamps. Group pumpkins of varying sizes for a curated autumn vignette on your doorstep or hallway table.
5. Beeswax Pillar Candles with Botanicals
Using a simple pillar candle mould, pour melted beeswax and embed dried botanicals — lavender stems, dried chamomile, or pressed leaves — around the outside before the wax fully sets. The translucent quality of beeswax lets the botanicals show through beautifully when the candle is lit.
6. Woven Autumn Wreath
Bend flexible willow or grapevine stems into a circular wreath base (or purchase a ready-made base). Weave in dried grasses, small pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and fabric ribbon in warm autumn tones. Attach with fine floral wire. This wreath can be used both indoors and outdoors and looks particularly beautiful on a front door.
7. Acorn and Seed Pod Craft Bowls
Collect acorns, seed pods, and small pebbles on autumn walks. Using a decoupage method, attach them to the outside of a plain papier-mâché bowl using strong craft glue, working row by row. Seal with a matte varnish. The finished bowl is a wonderful natural display piece — perfect for holding keys, jewellery, or dried potpourri.
Tips for Autumn Crafting
- Gather natural materials on dry days and bring them inside to dry thoroughly before use.
- Work with a warm colour palette — burnt orange, deep red, ochre, chocolate brown, and forest green all complement each other beautifully.
- Autumn crafts make wonderful seasonal gifts — candles, garlands, and botanical prints are all well-received.
- Involve children in simpler projects like leaf printing — it's a great way to connect crafting with nature.
Whether you complete one project or all seven, crafting with the season keeps you connected to the natural world and fills your home with warmth and character. Happy making!
